Transfer Boards Guide

Anyone that’s ever had to move a patient from one location to another immediately realizes that it’s important to maximize the patient’s comfort and to have speed and efficiency when moving the patient. This is done with the use of transfer boards which tend to be light enough to carry the additional weight of someone laying on it, and also with multiple hand holes to have more than one person assist with the transition.

On top of that, they come in various sizes to accommodate all patient types and sizes and are usually made with a slick material to support that easy transfer. Finally, keep in mind that they don’t all come in a completely flat structure and can curve as necessary, as many have a semi-rigid construction. One of the most standard plastic board options out there is the Plastic Transfer Board. This can support up to 300 lbs. and is meant to easily and slowly move a patient from one location to another. It comes in two different lengths, either 23 inches or 30 inches. It’s a no-frills option that is perfect for patients that may be lacking the proper upper body strength to move themselves.

Then there are the radiolucent options, such as the Bariatric Patient Transfer Board. This allows the patient to stay on the board while getting imaging done and then quickly transfer back to the gurney or stretcher as is needed to get back to their room. It comes in a solid white color, and its dimensions are 72″ L x 32″ W. It’s also 1/4th of an inch thick. It’s super flexible to move with as it has 16 handles to grip as needed.

Another great radiolucent option, albeit a bit smaller coming in at 72″L x 22″ W and with 3/16th inch thickness, is the Static Treated Transfer Board. This is an ideal option if you find your patients sticking to other transfer boards or building up static, as this board works to eliminate both issues. This model comes with 12 handles.

For those looking for simpler options, you can have a slide board patient transfer sheet ready to go at most operating tables or imaging areas. This is a much lighter option than some of the other transfer boards but also comes in a bit smaller at 31″ L x 23″ W. It’s extremely smooth regardless, so it can be slid under a patient either in the sitting or lying down position. It still comes with six handles for easy maneuverability and transfer.

Don’t forget with all these different-sized transfer boards to have them properly stored and easy to access. You don’t want them simply lying around where they may bend out of shape by accident or lose their anti-static coating. Instead, get yourself a Transfer Device Storage Rack for the proper storage of each device every time. Each rack comfortably holds one transfer board either in a vertical or horizontal position.
